Combat medics are responsible for maintaining the health of soldiers and preventing diseases and accidents. Military medical personnel are constantly on the road in times of war. Wherever they go, they treat their patients like family, taking it upon themselves to provide the most attentive care.

Born in 1931, Lee Wei-zhi had trekked all over China in his time serving as a military doctor. His travels took him from his hometown Shandong Province to the northeast and the region south of the Yangtze before finally crossing the ocean to Taiwan. After retiring from years of military life, the towering, well-built soldier must have countless riveting stories. Even so, he always denies he has much to tell, saying humbly: “My story is commonplace and not worth recounting.”

Lee’s time marching with the army took him all around the island, in addition to long stints stationed on the offshore islands of Kinmen and Penghu. As an army medic, he regularly provided medical services and voluntary care for locals, helping to strengthen the relationship between soldiers and civilians. Because he treated people with such integrity and kindness, he quickly gained gratitude and trust from the people. In this country where high respect is placed on doctors, he was a most eligible bachelor.

But Lee would not get married until the age of 45. The 25 years he spent with the military, the golden years of his youth, were entirely dedicated to his home and country. He never stopped to think for himself. Lee often says that compared to his time fleeing war, his current life feels like paradise. He is grateful to have met his other half later in life and to have the chance to grow old together with her.

When he was 50 years old, Lee was formally discharged from the military as a major of the medical corps. He continued to be called upon to offer medical services at Taipei Songshan Airport and military hospitals around the island. He did not officially retire until age 65.
